Included are letters discussing his studies of medicine in New York, whaling voyage in 1841-1843 onboard of a New Bedford whaler Newton, early medical practice in Illinois, contemporary politics, including the Republican party, Lincoln presidency and the Civil War, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Evening Post, family news, and business affairs, including his involvement in the trade with the South during the Civil War.
